Frequently Asked Questions

  • Spelling to Communicate (S2C) is a method that helps nonspeaking and minimally speaking individuals express their thoughts by pointing to letters on a board to spell words. It focuses on building reliable motor skills for communication, recognizing that difficulty with speech does not necessarily reflect difficulty with understanding or thinking.

  • S2C is designed for nonspeaking and minimally speaking individuals of all ages. This includes individuals who may:

    • Have limited or unreliable speech

    • Use scripts or echolalia

    • Have difficulty pointing, typing, or responding consistently

No prior experience with letterboards or spelling is required to get started.

  • S2C takes a different approach by focusing on motor control rather than speech production. While traditional approaches often emphasize verbal output or independent device use right away, S2C starts by helping the individual develop the physical ability to respond reliably.

It’s not about replacing other forms of communication—it’s about expanding access and finding what works for the individual.

  • Sessions are structured but engaging. Each session includes:

    • An age-appropriate, cognitive lessson

    • Opportunities to point to letters and spell responses

    • Support for regulation, attention, and motor control

The goal is to build both communication skills and confidence over time.

  • Progress looks different for everyone.

Some individuals begin to show more intentional responses fairly quickly, while for others it takes time to build the motor control needed for reliable communication. Consistency, practice, and support all play an important role.

  • Getting started is simple.
