Who we are
At Greater Boston Spelling Center, we believe communication is a fundamental human right. Our work focuses on teaching the purposeful motor skills that allow nonspeaking individuals to express their thoughts through Spelling to Communicate (S2C).
Spelling to Communicate (S2C) offers a way for nonspeaking and minimally speaking individuals to express what they’ve always known and felt. By pointing to letters to spell, spellers can share their thoughts, even when speech isn’t reliable.
Many individuals have strong understanding and awareness but struggle with the motor control needed for speech. This can create a frustrating disconnect between the brain and the body. S2C works to support that connection by building purposeful motor skills in a structured, supportive way.
We presume competence, meet spellers where they are, and provide meaningful, age-respectful learning. Communication may look different, but with the right support, it is absolutely possible.
Seeing firsthand what becomes possible when someone is given a reliable way to communicate inspired a commitment to helping more families access this method. We are dedicated to supporting spellers and their families with patience, respect, and the belief that every voice deserves to be heard.
